Marlins 1, Pirates 7
Garrett Jones and rookie Pedro Alvarez combined to drive in six runs and James McDonald tossed seven strong innings as the Pittsburgh Pirates cruised to a 7-1 triumph over the Florida Marlins on Monday.
Jones belted a two-run double and added a sacrifice fly while Alvarez had a pair of run-scoring singles as Pittsburgh (40-78) snapped a seven-game losing streak.
Andrew McCutchen belted a solo home run and joined rookie Jose Tabata and Neil Walker by scoring twice for the Pirates.
The offensive outburst was enough for McDonald (2-2), who picked up his second win in three outings since joining Pittsburgh. Acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers prior to the trade deadline, the 25-year-old right-hander allowed one run and three hits while striking out six.
Chris Resop worked a scoreless eighth inning and Joel Hanrahan retired the side in the ninth to preserve the win.
Logan Morrison scored on Dan Uggla's groundout in the fourth inning for Florida (57-60), which dropped its fourth in a row and ninth in its last 13 games.
Chris Volstad (6-9) permitted five runs and five hits in as many innings to take the loss.
