Giants 2, Dodgers 1

Mike Fontenot singled in the tiebreaking run and Matt Cain pitched seven dominating innings as the host San Francisco Giants defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1 on Wednesday night.

Pinch-hitter Travis Ishikawa doubled with one out in the seventh and Fontenot delivered a two-out single to center field to score pinch-runner Emmanuel Burriss from third base to break a scoreless tie.

Cain (12-10) gave up three hits, walked none and struck out five while helping the Giants move within a half-game of the first-place San Diego Padres in the National League West. It was the second straight time Cain defeated Los Angeles after losing his first eight career decisions against the Dodgers.

Sergio Romo retired the side in the eighth inning on just six pitches and Brian Wilson pitched the ninth for his 43rd save.

San Francisco scored an insurance run in the eighth when Aubrey Huff came home on Pablo Sandoval’s fielder’s choice. The run proved important when Los Angeles’ Andre Ethier homered with two outs in the ninth.

Chad Billingsley (11-10) was the hard-luck loser, allowing one run and six hit in seven innings. Billingsley struck out seven and walked two.
