Indians 4, Tigers 0 (Game 1)

Rookie starter Mitch Talbot threw seven innings of shutout ball to help the Cleveland Indians down the Detroit Tigers 4-0 in the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader.

Talbot (10-13) scattered five hits while striking out five in 93 pitches. The right-hander allowed just one runner to get into scoring position.

Travis Hafner and Shin-Soo Choo provided all the offense he would need. Hafner homered to right field with Choo on board in the third inning and Choo added a two-run shot of his own in the fifth to put Cleveland up 4-0. Choo was 3-for-4 at the plate.

Detroit starter Max Scherzer (12-10) gave up four runs on eight hits over five innings of work. He struck out four and walked three.

The Tigers, who had scored 29 runs in their previous four games, were held without an extra-base hit and left five runners stranded on base.
