Red Sox 9. Yankees 6
The Boston Red Sox lineup finally looked like one of the most powerful in baseball Friday afternoon, beating the visiting New York Yankees 9-6 for their first win of the season.
Boston (1-6) emerged from its worst start since 1945 by pounding Yankees starter Phil Hughes for six earned runs on seven hits before he exited after two innings.
Dustin Pedroia hit his first homer in the opening inning and added a two-run single in a five-run second to help Boston take a 6-3 lead over New York (4-3).
Jarrod Saltalamacchia's double off Bartolo Colon (0-1) in the fifth scored the go-ahead run and J.D. Drew’s two-run single in the seventh added insurance for Boston, which produced more runs than it had in its previous four games combined.
Red Sox starter John Lackey (1-1) was the beneficiary, earning the victory despite allowing six earned runs on seven hits and two walks in five innings.
Brett Gardner and Robinson Cano each had two hits for the Bombers, who were retired in order in the ninth by Jonathan Papelbon for his first save.
