Rays 4, Red Sox 0
James Shields pitched his third shutout of the season and Justin Ruggiano homered as the host Tampa Bay Rays defeated Boston 4-0 on Tuesday to snap the Red Sox’ nine-game winning streak.
Shields (6-4) scattered five hits, struck out five and walked three in his fourth complete game of the season.
Carl Crawford was 0-for-3 in his first game as a visitor at Tampa Bay. Crawford signed with the Red Sox as a free agent in the off-season. The Red Sox had their only serious threat in the first, but Crawford grounded out with the bases loaded to end the inning.
Tim Wakefield (3-2) took the loss. He allowed four hits and two runs (one earned) in seven innings.
Ruggiano broke a scoreless tie with a solo homer in the fifth. Tampa Bay made it 2-0 in the sixth when Evan Longoria scored on a passed ball.
The Rays added two more runs in the eighth on RBI singles by Casey Kotchman and John Jaso.
