Brad Penny tossed eight shutout innings to lead Detroit to its seventh straight win, a 3-0 victory over visiting Kansas City on Saturday afternoon.
Penny (4-3) allowed just five hits, striking out two without a walk. The Royals didn't advance a runner past second base until the seventh inning.
Jose Valverde worked the ninth for his 10th save.
The Tigers got all the offense they needed in the first inning, when Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Jhonny Peralta hit consecutive RBI singles against Jeff Francis (0-5).
Francis worked eight innings in defeat, scattering seven hits and walking one.
Peralta and Scott Sizemore had two hits each.
