Pirates 3, Mets 1
Paul Maholm pitched seven scoreless innings to carry the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 3-1 victory over the visiting New York Mets on Monday night.
Maholm (3-7) allowed only three hits and struck out four to win for the second time since April 25 as the Pirates earned a split of the four-game series despite scoring only seven runs.
Joel Hanrahan worked a perfect ninth for his 17th save in as many chances. Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen singled in the ninth to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.
Brandon Wood hit a solo home run and Neil Walker went 1-for-3 with two RBIs for the Pirates.
Mets starter Mike Pelfrey (3-5) was a hard-luck loser, giving up two runs on four hits in seven innings. He fanned seven and did not walk a batter.
The Pirates broke on top when Walker's single plated Jose Tabata in the first inning and doubled the lead on Wood's solo homer in the fifth.
The Mets cut the lead to 2-1 in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Jose Reyes, but gave it right back in the bottom of the inning when Tim Byrdak walked Walker with the bases loaded.
