Angels 6, Twins 5

Erick Aybar drove in three runs and scored two more as the Los Angeles Angels scratched past the host Minnesota Twins, 6-5, on Sunday.

Jeff Mathis had two hits and scored a pair of runs for the Angels, who pounded out 11 hits a day after managing only one in a 10-inning loss.

Closer Jordan Walden made things interesting in the ninth, allowing two runs, but got Michael Cuddyer to fly out to deep center with the tying run on third to secure his 12th save.

Los Angeles got to Twins starter Carl Pavano (2-5) for three runs in the third inning to overcome an early 1-0 hole. Aybar provided the big hit of the rally, sending a triple down the right field line to push across two runs.

Minnesota cut it to 3-2 in the bottom of the inning but Aybar struck again in the fifth, singling to center to score Mathis.

Dan Haren (5-3) was not as sharp as usual, surrendering three runs on 10 hits in six-plus innings, but was effective enough to grab the win with a little help. Scott Downs came on in the seventh with runners on second and third and no outs but managed to escape the jam with the lead intact.
