Cubs 5, Cardinals 4 (10)
Tyler Colvin's pinch-hit RBI single plated Geovany Soto with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Chicago Cubs rallied to beat the visiting St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 on Friday afternoon.
Soto led off the final inning with a base hit against Octavio Dotel (0-2) and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Marlon Byrd. Colvin got into a 0-2 hole before dropping a base hit into center field, shallow enough for Soto to comfortably beat the throw home.
Sean Marshall (6-5) got the win after retiring the Cardinals in order in the top of the 10th.
The Cubs, who hit into four double plays, trailed by three runs before Darwin Barney began the comeback effort with a fifth-inning solo home run to make it 4-2.
Chicago scored another run in the seventh on consecutive one-out triples by Barney and Blake DeWitt and tied it in the eighth on an RBI double by Soto.
St. Louis, which entered the day 6 1/2 games behind Milwaukee in the National League Central, drew first blood on a two-run homer by Yadier Molina in the second inning. David Freese added a solo homer in the fourth to make it 4-1.
Chicago starter Randy Wells matched a season high by working seven innings, allowing four runs on four hits. He finished with five strikeouts and three walks. Jaime Garcia gave up nine hits over 6 1/3 innings for the Cardinals, walking two and striking out one.
