Four pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Pittsburgh Pirates edged the visiting Milwaukee Brewers 2-0 Wednesday afternoon.
Jason Grilli (1-0), who missed the entire 2010 season with a knee injury, struck out four and did not allow a base runner in 2 2/3 innings of relief to earn his first victory in almost two years.
Jose Veras pitched a perfect eighth and Joel Hanrahan struck out the final three batters, after putting two on base, for his 32nd save as the Pirates split the four-game series.
The Pirates got sacrifice flies from Andrew McCutchen in the first and Neil Walker in the fourth. Each has 75 RBIs to share the team lead.
Pittsburgh starter Aaron Thompson went 4 1/3 innings in his major league debut, allowing four hits and two walks. Grilli got the final two batters in the fifth with runners at second and third.
Milwaukee starter Shaun Marcum (11-4) allowed four hits and two runs over six innings. He threw 114 pitches, 31 in the fourth, to lose for the first time since June 29.
The Brewers left five on base in the first five innings.
