Reds 5, Padres 3
Jay Bruce capped his third-straight multi-hit game with a three-run homer in the eighth inning as the Cincinnati Reds beat the visiting San Diego Padres 5-3 on Friday.
After San Diego reliever Josh Spence (0-1) walked Reds first baseman Joey Votto intentionally, Bruce made him pay by launching an 0-1 pitch over the right-field fence to erase a 3-2 deficit. It was the third home run in five games for Bruce following a 22-game homerless drought.
Bill Bray (3-2) recorded the final out in the eighth after the Padres had taken the lead on Logan Forsythe's RBI single. Francisco Cordero worked the ninth for his 23rd save.
The eighth-inning meltdown marked the first runs Spence had allowed since July 10, a span of 13 1/3 innings covering 15 appearances.
San Diego's Mat Latos limited the Reds to a pair of runs on four hits over seven innings.
Cincinnati counterpart Bronson Arroyo saw his winless streak extended to eight games despite allowing only two runs (one earned) on six hits through six innings. The veteran righthander hasn't beaten a National League club since June 13.
