Orioles 2, Nationals 1

Matt Wieters belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift host Baltimore over Washington.

Adam Jones singled off Sean Burnett to start the eighth before Wieters smashed the game-winning shot over the left-center field fence for the Orioles’ major-league leading 38th homer in the seventh inning or later.

Pedro Strop (4-2) got the final out of the eighth and Jim Johnson pitched the ninth for his 22nd save as Baltimore took two of three from the Nationals despite scoring just five runs in the series.

The final two outs came when Johnson struck out Danny Espinosa and Wieters threw out Ian Desmond trying to steal second for a strike-em-out, throw-em-out ending.

Washington took a 1-0 lead in the third when Jhonatan Solano led off the inning with a double and scored from third on a two-out single by Ryan Zimmerman.

Ross Detwiler pitched five shutout innings and Craig Stammen hurled two before Burnett (0-1) allowed Wieters’ 10th homer of the season. Burnett had allowed just three runs in 26 innings entering the contest.
