Red Sox 13, Rays 5

Mike Aviles, batting leadoff in place of the injured Jacoby Ellsbury, broke a 5-5 tie with a home run in the seventh inning as host Boston came back from an early 4-0 deficit to defeat Tampa Bay for the second straight day.

Aviles, who finished 3-for-5, drove a low breaking ball from Burke Badenhop (0-1) just over the Green Monster to lead off the inning for the fourth of five Red Sox' homers.

Cody Ross, starting in center field in Ellsbury's absence, added a two-run double in the seventh and a two-run shot high over the Monster in the eighth for his first homer as a Red Sox.

David Ortiz went 4-for-5 with five RBIs, including a game-tying two-run homer in the fifth. His three-run double began the five-run eighth inning.

Clay Buchholz (1-0) settled down after a rough start and allowed only two hits after the third inning. He allowed five runs and six hits in seven innings.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a two-run homer to center field to bring the Red Sox to within 4-2. After Dustin Pedroia's solo shot into the Monster seats in the third made it 5-3, Ortiz connected for his first homer when he drove Jeremy Hellickson's fastball into the Red Sox' bullpen, a two-run shot in the fifth to tie it 5-5.

Luke Scott hit a three-run homer and had four RBIs for Tampa Bay. Scott sent a 3-2 fastball into the right-field seats to give the Rays a 4-0 lead and added a run-scoring double in the third to put Tampa Bay ahead 5-2.

Tampa Bay scored its first run when Carlos Pena doubled off the right-field wall to drive in Desmond Jennings.

Hellickson, the 2011 American League Rookie of the Year, allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings.

Prior to the game, the Red Sox placed Ellsbury on the 15-day disabled list with a partially dislocated right shoulder. The All-Star was injured trying to break up a double play during Friday's 12-2 victory over the Rays. There is no timetable for his return, but he is likely to miss at least six weeks.
