Pedro Ciriaco ripped a two-out RBI double to snap a tie in the ninth inning as Boston defeated Toronto for the second straight game.
Cody Ross belted his 21st homer to lead off the second inning and scored on Jarrod Saltalamacchia's RBI single in the fourth. James Loney and Saltalamacchia collected two hits apiece for the Red Sox, who moved a percentage point ahead of the Blue Jays in the basement of the American League East.
After failing to score with the bases loaded in the eighth inning, Boston redeemed itself in the ninth. Saltalamacchia led off the frame by lining a double into the right-field corner before advancing to third on Mike Aviles' flyout. Ciriaco then ripped a belt-high split-finger fastball from Steve Delabar (4-2) down the left-field line to give Boston a 3-2 lead.
Craig Breslow (1-0) relieved starter Clay Buchholz and retired the side in order in the eighth inning to pick up the victory. Andrew Bailey struck out Colby Rasmus and Rajai Davis in the ninth to secure his fourth save.
Yunel Escobar had an RBI single and Anthony Gose collected two hits and scored on Adam Lind's sacrifice fly for the Blue Jays, who have dropped four of five overall and eight of their last 10 at home.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Boston's Dustin Pedroia returned to the lineup after a two-game absence following the birth of his second child, Cole. The All-Star second basemen went 0-for-3. ... Buchholz matched a season high with five walks to drive up his pitch count. He yielded two runs on four hits in seven innings for a no-decision. ... Lind went 1-for-2 to improve to 11-for-35 in his career versus Buchholz.
