Yankees 11, Angels 5

Derek Jeter smashed a three-run homer and Raul Ibanez hit a two-run blast as host New York defeated Los Angeles.

Ibanez had three RBIs and Nick Swisher drove in two runs as the Yankees moved into a first-place tie in the American League East with the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays.

Jeter’s opposite-field homer over the right-field fence make it 8-1 in the fourth, and Ibanez clubbed an upper-deck blast in the seventh to push New York’s lead back up to six runs.

Los Angeles whittled away at its early seven-run deficit, beginning with a two-run homer in the fifth by Chris Iannetta. Maicer Izturis delivered a run-scoring double in the sixth and Albert Pujols singled home a run in the seventh to make it 8-5.

Swisher had a run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh for New York prior to Ibanez’s big blow.

Ivan Nova (2-0) gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings.

Curtis Granderson’s run-scoring groundout in the third put New York ahead for good. Alex Rodriguez added a run-scoring single and Mark Teixeira belted a run-scoring double later in the inning to give the Yankees a 4-1 edge. Swisher capped the four-run inning with a sacrifice fly.

Mark Trumbo homered for Los Angeles in the second inning. Ibanez had a game-tying single in the bottom of the frame.

Angels starter Jerome Williams (0-1) allowed five runs and five hits in 2 2/3 innings.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Ibanez had gone hitless in four of the previous five games before going 2-for-4 on Sunday … Pujols is homerless in 37 at-bats … Jeter has 17 career homers against the Angels … Izturis and Howie Kendrick each had three hits for Los Angeles.
