Rays 3, Marlins 0

Alex Cobb struck out a career-high 10 in seven shutout innings as host Tampa Bay defeated Miami.

B.J. Upton hit a leadoff homer in the first and Drew Sutton and Ben Zobrist later added run-scoring singles as the Rays defeated the Marlins for the ninth time in the last 10 meetings.

Cobb (3-3) gave up two hits and one walk while breaking a three-game losing streak. Joel Peralta struck out two in the eighth and Fernando Rodney struck out two in the ninth for his 19th save.

Miami was blanked twice in the series and has lost 10 of its last 12 games.

Cobb allowed only a third-inning single to Gaby Sanchez and a two-out single in the seventh to Greg Dobbs.

Upton took Josh Johnson (4-5) deep in the opening inning for the lone run Cobb would need. Sutton’s sixth-inning single gave Tampa Bay a 2-0 lead. Zobrist delivered his run-scoring single in the seventh.

Johnson allowed two runs and eight hits in six innings.
