Nationals 6, Cardinals 4 (10)
Kurt Suzuki doubled in two runs in the top of the 10th inning off Fernando Salas and visiting Washington inched closer to its first division title.
After St. Louis tied the game with a run on Jon Jay's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth, the Cardinals intentionally walked Danny Espinosa with two outs in the 10th to face Suzuki, who doubled into the left-center field gap.
The win moves the Nationals’ magic number for winning the National League East to one over Atlanta with four games to play. St. Louis’ magic number remained at three over Los Angeles for the second NL wild card. The Cardinals fell to 6-12 in extra-inning games this season.
Washington took a 4-0 lead on Mike Morse’s first-inning grand slam off Kyle Lohse. Morse’s shot to right field was originally ruled a single before being changed to a home run after video review. In an unusual scene, the umpires had Morse return to home plate, take a fake swing and run around the bases.
Drew Storen (3-1) recorded the win and Craig Stammen pitched a scoreless 10th inning for his first career save. Nationals starter Jordan Zimmermann allowed three runs over 6 1/3 innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: St. Louis SS Pete Kozma had three hits and turned in the defensive play of the game when he made a diving stop of Chad Tracy’s grounder in the ninth and threw out Tracy by a step. … Nationals CF Bryce Harper has scored in the first inning of the last four games and has 96 runs this season. … Lohse, who had allowed four earned runs just four times in his first 32 starts this season, gave up four runs with a season-high nine strikeouts over six frames.
