Dioner Navarro ripped a two-run single in the second inning and Johnny Cueto tossed seven solid frames as host Cincinnati dampened Milwaukee's postseason chances.
Jay Bruce drove in his career-high 98th run with an RBI double and Joey Votto added a run-scoring double of his own for the National League Central champion Reds, who moved into a tie with Washington for the best record in the National League.
Aramis Ramirez collected his 99th RBI with a solo homer in the seventh inning for the Brewers, who suffered their second straight loss to fall 4 1/2 games behind St. Louis in the race for the second wild card.
With the bases loaded in the second inning, Navarro fisted a fastball from rookie Mike Fiers (9-9) into shallow left field. Bruce and Chris Heisey races around the bases to give Cincinnati a 2-0 lead.
The offense proved more than enough for Cueto (19-9), who allowed two runs on five hits. Jonathan Broxton struck out the side in the eighth inning before Aroldis Chapman retired the side in the ninth for his 36th save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker had a stroke last week as he was being released from a hospital for an irregular heartbeat. The 63-year-old Baker could rejoin the club next week in time for its regular-season finale, the team said. ... Fiers yielded four runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings to take the loss. ... Reds bench coach Chris Speier improved to 8-2 while filling in for Baker as manager.
