Pirates 2, Diamondbacks 1

Neil Walker plated Clint Barmes with a broken-bat RBI single to snap a tie in the eighth inning as visiting Pittsburgh claimed two of three from Arizona.

Pedro Alvarez, who was mired in a 1-for-25 slump, belted a line-drive solo homer in the seventh inning as the Pirates won a series at Arizona for the first time since 2005.

After two quick outs in the eighth, Pittsburgh began its rally as Barmes and Andrew McCutchen responded with singles to shallow center field to chase starter Daniel Hudson (1-1). Reliever David Hernandez entered the game and promptly served up a single to shallow right field by Walker to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead.

Brad Lincoln (1-0), who was recalled earlier on Wednesday, relieved starter James McDonald and allowed one hit over three scoreless innings to pick up the win. Chris Resop and Tony Watson combined to pitch the eighth and Juan Cruz worked around a leadoff single by Miguel Montero to secure his second save.

Jason Kubel had an RBI single in the first inning for Arizona, which played without Chris Young (right shoulder contusion). A.J. Pollock, who was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Wednesday, took his place in the lineup and went 0-for-3.

Hudson, who permitted six runs and 10 hits in his last outing, suffered the hard-luck loss after yielding two runs on six hits in 7 2/3 innings.
