Orioles 5, Rays 4: Matt Wieters hit a home run and Nick Markakis had two hits and an RBI as host Baltimore claimed the opener of a three-game series between American League East rivals.
Manny Machado and Ryan Flaherty also drove in runs for the Orioles, who have won three of four meetings with Tampa Bay this season. The Rays have lost seven of their last eight games and totaled 14 runs during that stretch.
Desmond Jennings led off the game with a home run for Tampa Bay, but the offense didn't do much more until touching up reliever Pedro Strop in the eighth. Kelly Johnson's solo shot and Evan Longoria's two-run blast pulled the Rays within 5-4.
Orioles starter Jake Arrieta (1-0) labored through five innings, but held the Rays to one run on three hits. He struck out seven but also issued five walks. Jim Johnson worked a perfect ninth for his sixth save in as many opportunities.
Rays right-hander Roberto Hernandez (0-3) gave up five runs - three earned - on five hits over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out seven but dropped to 1-4 all-time at Camden Yards.
