Cubs 7, Diamondbacks 6 (12)

Nate Schierholtz doubled in the go-ahead run in the 12th inning to cap a five-RBI night as visiting Chicago outlasted Arizona.

Schierholtz singled in a run in the fourth and sent a three-run blast to right in the fifth as the Cubs jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Cody Ross’ sacrifice fly in the ninth capped the comeback and forced extra innings, but Anthony Rizzo drew a two-out walk in the 12th and Schierholtz followed by ripping a first-pitch fastball from David Hernandez (4-6) to left to plate the go-ahead run.

Rookie Junior Lake added two hits and an RBI and Rizzo doubled in a run for the Cubs. Hector Rondon (2-0) worked two scoreless innings to earn the win as the Diamondbacks fell 1 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the National League West.

Arizona cut it to 6-2 in the fifth when Darwin Barney’s error at second base allowed a pair of runs to sneak through. Paul Goldschmidt, who went 1-for-3 with four walks, launched his 22nd home run in the sixth to cut it to 6-5.

Jeff Samardzija started for Chicago and allowed four runs (three earned) while walking five in 5 2/3 innings. Diamondbacks starter Ian Kennedy was charged with six runs (two earned) on six hits in five frames.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cubs LF Alfonso Soriano has told the team he would waive his no-trade clause to go back to the New York Yankees. Soriano gave the team a list of clubs he would be willing to move to if a deal could be worked out. … Goldschmidt’s home run gave him 83 RBIs, eclipsing his previous career high of 82 set last season. … Chicago activated DeJesus from the 15-day DL before the game and optioned OF Dave Sappelt to Triple-A Iowa.
