Mat Latos struck out six over eight strong innings and Cincinnati benefited from four wild pitches to take three of four at home from Arizona.
Latos (13-4) gave up one run on five hits to win for the fifth time in his last six decisions and Sam LeCure posted his first career save one day after regular closer Aroldis Chapman was needed for a two-inning performance. Shin-Soo Choo went 2-for-4 and scored both runs for the Reds, who are 2 1/2 games behind National League Central-leading Pittsburgh.
Paul Goldschmidt finished with three hits as Arizona fell seven games behind Cincinnati for the NL’s second wild-card spot. Trevor Cahill gave up four hits over seven frames, but walked four and helped set up the Reds’ first run with three wild pitches.
Cahill gave up his only run in the third after Choo singled, advanced to third following two wild pitches and scored on Brandon Phillips’ groundout. Adam Eaton knotted it in the fourth when he led off with a single and scored three batters later on Aaron Hill’s two-out infield single to third.
Eury De La Rosa (0-1) came on in the eighth and yielded a single to Choo, who moved up a base on an errant pickoff attempt and took third on a sacrifice from Todd Frazier. Choo crossed the plate with the go-ahead run five pitches later when De La Rosa’s wild pitch glanced off catcher Wil Nieves’ glove and rolled to the backstop.
GAME NOTEBOOK: All three of Cahill’s wild pitches came over a five-pitch stretch and gave him a major league-leading 14 for the season. … Latos posted his sixth straight outing in which he has tossed at least six innings and permitted two or fewer runs. … The Reds placed RHP Jonathan Broxton on the disabled list Thursday after he reinjured his right elbow during Wednesday’s 10-7 victory.
