Freddie Freeman blasted a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth inning as host Atlanta rallied to win the opener of a five-game series.
Justin Upton singled to left with one out off New York starter Dillon Gee (5-7). Freeman, who finished 3-for-4, followed with a towering shot into the right-field seats as the Braves won their third in a row and extended their National League East lead to 7 1/2 games.
Gee took a three-hit shutout into the ninth inning. Atlanta reliever David Carpenter (1-0) got the victory with a scoreless ninth after starter Tim Hudson held the Mets to one run on six hits in seven innings.
Gee drove in the Mets’ lone run in the seventh, steering a two-out single to left to score John Buck. New York’s Lucas Duda finished 4-for-4.
The first pitch was delivered at 11:02 p.m. ET after a 3-hour, 52-minute rain delay. The two teams are scheduled to play a day-night doubleheader Tuesday to make up a May 4 rainout.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Atlanta improved its major-league best home record to 24-8. … Duda posted his third career four-hit game, his last coming Sept. 16, 2011 in Atlanta. … Freeman is hitting .369 in his past 31 games, including 15 multi-hit contests, and is fifth in the NL in hitting at .327.
