Will Venable homered to snap a tie in the seventh inning and rookie Jedd Gyorko went deep twice and drove in four runs as host San Diego overcame an early six-run deficit to jolt Chicago.
Venable, who was named the National League Player of the Week, added a two-run triple among his three hits. Logan Forsythe forged a 6-6 tie with an RBI triple in the sixth inning for the Padres, who have won two in a row and four of six.
Nate Schierholtz belted a three-run homer and Brian Bogusevic added a two-run triple to highlight a six-run first inning. Dioner Navarro added an RBI single for the Cubs, who stumbled to their 10th loss in 12 outings.
With the game tied at 6-6, James Russell (1-5) relieved starter Edwin Jackson and saw Venable deposit his 1-0 slider over the wall in right field for his 18th homer - and third in seven games. Gyorko, who belted a three-run homer in the fourth inning, provided insurance with a blast to lead off the eighth.
Five pitchers - including Nick Vincent (3-1) - tossed 8 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Edinson Volquez, who yielded six runs on five hits before making an early exit. Huston Street retired the side in the ninth for his 25th save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Volquez entered the contest with a 5-0 mark versus Chicago, but didn't last long. Navarro's single to center plated SS Starlin Castro before Schierholtz jumped on a 2-2 curveball and sent it over the wall in right field for his 19th homer - and third in five contests. Bogusevic capped the uprising with a triple to right-center, scoring CF Junior Lake and 3B Donnie Murphy. ... Gyorko has recorded eight of his 16 homers in August, setting a franchise record for a rookie in any month. ... Schierholtz is one homer shy of matching 1B Anthony Rizzo for the team lead.
