Phillies 5, Reds 3

Jimmy Rollins hit a two-run homer and host Philadelphia took advantage of a Cincinnati error to score the go-ahead run in the eighth inning in the opener of the three-game series.

Justin De Fratus (2-0) recorded the final two outs in the eighth to earn the win while Jonathan Papelbon pitched the ninth for his eighth save. Philadelphia starter Cliff Lee threw seven innings, allowing two runs and six hits.

Sean Marshall (0-1) took the loss in relief of starter Tony Cingrani, who allowed three runs on five hits over five innings. Joey Votto and Jay Bruce hit home runs to help the Reds crawl out of an early 3-0 deficit.

Michael Young worked a 10-pitch walk with one out in eighth and Ryan Howard followed with an infield single, bringing Jonathan Broxton into the game in relief of Marshall. Broxton hit Delmon Young with a pitch to load the bases, Michael Young scored on an error by Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips and Howard came home on a Carlos Ruiz sacrifice fly to give the Phillies a 5-3 lead.

Lee helped himself out by scoring two runs. He just missed a homer of his own to lead off the fifth and came home two batters later on Michael Young’s triple to deep center, which gave the Phillies a 3-0 lead.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Bruce is 13-for-33 during an eight-game hitting streak. … An MRI exam done on Phillies RHP Mike Adams revealed a slight mid-back strain. The team’s setup man has been out since Tuesday and probably won’t return for this series. … The Phillies recalled RHP B.J. Rosenberg from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and returned LHP Raul Valdes to the minor-league club. Valdes allowed five home runs in 20 innings for Philadelphia.
