Rays 3, Marlins 1

Roberto Hernandez gave up three hits over 8 2/3 dominant innings as visiting Tampa Bay handed Miami its eighth straight defeat.

Hernandez (3-5) limited the Marlins to an unearned run while striking out five before giving way to Fernando Rodney, who recorded the final out with one runner on for his 10th save. Desmond Jennings was 2-for-2 with a walk for the Rays, who have won four straight games overall and 12 of the last 13 meetings with Miami.

Marlins starter Tom Koehler (0-3) allowed three runs on seven hits over a career-high eight innings while striking out four and walking one. Koehler has not yielded more than three runs in his four starts this season.

Kelly Johnson singled home a run and another came home on a double-play grounder as the Rays jumped in front 2-0 in the first. Chris Coghlan doubled to lead off the bottom half of the inning, took third on Placido Polanco’s fly out and scored after right fielder Matt Joyce’s throw got away.

Koehler allowed five hits in the first two innings and did not give up another until a one-out double by James Loney in the seventh. Jennings followed with a single and Yunel Escobar plated Loney with a sacrifice fly to extend the Rays' lead.
