Yankees 7, Blue Jays 2
Yankees 7, Blue Jays 2: Robinson Cano belted a pair of two-run homers and David Phelps was sensational over a career-high seven innings as host New York breezed past Toronto for the second straight day.
Cano took Brandon Morrow (1-3) over the right-field wall in the third inning and added a shot to right-center in the fifth to cap his 12th career multi-homer game. Travis Hafner added a two-run blast in support of Phelps (2-2), who limited the Blue Jays to a run on six hits while fanning eight.
Morrow, pitching for the first time in nearly two weeks, was charged with five runs on seven hits over five innings. Edwin Encarnacion hit a solo homer for the Blue Jays, who have scored just two runs in two games against New York after racking up 33 in their previous three outings.
With Brett Gardner aboard and the Yankees ahead 1-0, Cano drilled a Morrow slider into the first row of seats in right. Colby Rasmus’ single in the fourth made it a 3-1 game, but Cano extended the advantage in the fifth with a shot just over the Yankee bullpen for his 12th home run.
Phelps took care of the rest, registering at least one strikeout in every inning but the fifth to improve to 1-1 in four starts since joining the rotation.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Yankees improved to 18-0 when scoring first. ... Five of Cano’s multi-homer games have come against Toronto. ... Morrow has surrendered four home runs in 10 1/3 innings against New York this season.
