Cardinals 6, Pirates 5 (12)

Matt Holliday singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning as host St. Louis won the rubber match of the three-game series.

Matt Carpenter, who had an RBI triple among four hits and reached base five times, started the winning rally by drawing a one-out walk and moved to third on Jon Jay's ground single before Holliday ripped a 3-2 pitch off Bryan Morris (5-6) up the middle to give the Cardinals their third walk-off win of the season - and second of the series.

Holliday also had an RBI double in a five-run fifth to extend his hitting streak to 12 games and Daniel Descalso added a two-run single to draw the Cardinals within two games of first-place Pittsburgh in the National League Central. Kevin Siegrist (1-1) pitched one scoreless innings for his first major-league victory.

Russell Martin hit a tying solo home run in the eighth inning and Clint Barmes had a two-run shot for the Pirates, who blew a four-run lead in losing for the fifth time in six games.

The Pirates opened the scoring with a four-run fifth inning, as Andrew Lambo collected his first major-league hit with an RBI double and scored on Barmes' first homer since May 12. St. Louis answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning when Descalso singled home a pair, Carpenter delivered a run-scoring triple and scored on Jay's single and Holliday doubled home a run to chase A.J. Burnett.
