Padres 2, Pirates 0
Andrew Cashner took a perfect game into the seventh inning before settling for his first career shutout as visiting San Diego took the opener of a four-game series.
Cashner (10-8) lost his perfect game when Jose Tabata led off the bottom of the seventh with a base hit to right, but later got Andrew McCutchen to ground into a double play and retired the next nine in order to face the minimum in a 97-pitch one-hitter. The Padres right-hander struck out seven and also scored a run to help his team improve to 29-10 all-time at PNC Park.
A.J. Burnett (8-11), who threw his one career no-hitter against the Padres in 2001, allowed two runs and six hits while striking out eight in 6 2/3 solid innings for the Pirates, who remained tied for first with St. Louis in the race for the National League Central title.
Burnett stayed with Cashner and took a shutout into the seventh before running into trouble. A pair of singles and a bunt into a fielder's choice by Cashner put runners at the corners for Will Venable, who broke the scoreless tie with a sacrifice fly.
After Alexi Amarista was hit by a pitch, Jedd Gyorko singled in Cashner to make it 2-0 and chase Burnett, who fell to 2-6 in his career versus San Diego.
