Royals 4, Diamondbacks 3
Mike Moustakas homered and had four RBIs as visiting Kansas City defeated Arizona for the second straight night.
Yordano Ventura (9-8) struck out eight and gave up two runs in six innings as the Royals won for the 11th time in 14 games. Kansas City trails first-place Detroit by 3 1/2 games in the American League Central and is just a half-game behind Toronto for the AL’s second wild-card spot.
Wade Davis worked out of a self-induced jam in the eighth and Greg Holland allowed Mark Trumbo’s sacrifice fly in the ninth before recording his AL-leading 32nd save. Diamondbacks starter Josh Collmenter (8-6) suffered the loss despite giving up just three runs and three hits in six innings.
Alex Gordon and Lorenzo Cain drew two-out walks against Collmenter in the fourth inning and Moustakas followed with a run-scoring single to give the Royals a 3-2 lead. Davis fanned Tuffy Gosewisch with two on to end the eighth and Moustakas got his fourth RBI of the night when he reached on a fielder’s choice in the ninth on a play in which he originally was called out at first before a replay challenge overturned the call.
Cain singled with two out in the second and Moustakas followed with his blast to right. The Diamondbacks tied it the third on run-scoring singles by Aaron Hill and David Peralta.
