Red Sox 4, Yankees 3

Anthony Ranaudo worked six strong innings in his major-league debut as new-look Boston turned aside visiting New York in the opener of a three-game series.

Dustin Pedroia drove in two runs while David Ortiz and David Ross each added an RBI for the Red Sox, who went through a flurry of roster moves prior to the game as new faces joined the team following Thursday’s trade deadline. Ranaudo (1-0), who took over the rotation spot of departed right-hander John Lackey, allowed two runs on four hits and four walks to grab the win.

Carlos Beltran homered and singled in a run while Derek Jeter went deep for the Yankees, who fell for the fifth time in six games and dropped six games behind first-place Baltimore in the American League East. Former Boston left-hander Chris Capuano (1-2) made his second start since joining New York and was charged with four runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 frames.

Brock Holt ripped a one-out triple down the first-base line in the third and scored on Pedroia’s ground-rule double into the triangle in center before Ortiz’s single made it a 2-0 gap. Beltran led of the fourth with a shot into the bullpen in right but the Red Sox got that run back in the bottom of the frame when Will Middlebrooks led off with a double and scored on Ross’ single.

Jeter’s leadoff blast to left in the eighth drew the Yankees within 4-3 but Mookie Betts made a diving catch on the warning track in center later in the inning and Junichi Tazawa stranded the tying run on third to keep Boston in front. Koji Uehara tossed a perfect ninth to pick up his 22nd save.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
The Red Sox designated 1B/OF Mike Carp for assignment, placed RF Shane Victorino (back, hamstring) on the 15-day DL and recalled LHP Tommy Layne, RHP Alex Wilson, OF Betts and 3B Middlebrooks from Triple-A Pawtucket. … Stephen Drew, who switched clubhouses after being traded from Boston to New York on Thursday, made his first career start at 2B and went 0-for-4 against his former team. … Martin Prado appeared as a pinch hitter in his debut for the Yankees and stayed in the game at RF, a position he had played for a total of two innings previously in the majors.
