Angels 9, Astros 3

David Freese drove in four runs in his first game off the disabled list and Tyler Skaggs tossed seven strong innings as host Los Angeles snapped Houston’s three-game winning streak.

Mike Trout added two hits and three RBIs and Howie Kendrick had two hits and scored two runs for the Angels, who have won nine of their last 12 games. Freese went 2-for-5 and sparked the Angels’ three-run first inning with a two-run single in his first game since landing on the disabled list May 3 with a broken right middle finger.

Los Angeles extended its lead to 5-1 in the fourth on Trout’s RBI single off Scott Feldman (2-2), who allowed eight runs (three earned) on nine hits over four-plus innings. That was more than enough run support for Skaggs (4-1), who won for the first time in six starts at home while striking out six and yielding one run on five hits and one walk.

The Angels capitalized on a costly error by Astros shortstop Jonathan Villar in the fifth and scored three runs to put the game out of reach. Trout, who has reached base in 15 straight games, capped the inning with an RBI single off Jerome Williams.

Jose Altuve went 3-for-5 and Dexter Fowler and Jason Castro had two hits apiece for the Astros, who were looking to win four in a row for the first time this season. Altuve is hitting .418 (23-for-55) during his career-long 12-game hitting streak.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Angels optioned INF Luis Jimenez to Triple-A Salt Lake to make room for Freese, who extended his hitting streak to seven games. … Houston has recorded at least nine hits in 10 straight games. … Los Angeles CF Collin Cowgill returned to the lineup after missing Monday’s game with a sore hip and went 1-for-4.
