Cardinals 5, Marlins 2

Justin Masterson combined with three relievers on a five-hitter and Matt Adams drove in a pair of runs as visiting St. Louis salvaged the finale of the three-game series.

Masterson and Daniel Descalso each recorded an RBI while Matt Carpenter collected three hits and scored twice for the Cardinals, who climbed within two games of first-place Milwaukee in the National League Central . Masterson (6-7) yielded three singles and struck out three over seven innings en route to improving to 2-1 since being acquired from Cleveland.

Pinch-hitter Jeff Baker belted a two-run homer in the ninth and Casey McGehee registered two hits for the Marlins, who fell seven games behind Washington for first in the NL East. Nathan Eovaldi (6-7) yielded four runs - two earned - and eight hits in six frames as he fell to 0-2 in four career starts versus the Cardinals.

St. Louis broke through in the third to take a 2-0 lead as Jon Jay led off with a single and moved to third on Carpenter's one-out base hit. Matt Holliday drew a two-out walk to load the bases for Adams, whose single to right-center field plated two.

The Cardinals added a run in the fifth, when Carpenter singled and scored on an error by Miami second baseman Jordany Valdespin. Masterson helped his own cause an inning later with a single that scored Oscar Taveras for a 4-0 advantage and pinch-hitter Descalso drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth to force in the final run for St. Louis.
