Padres 1, Phillies 0

Andrew Cashner outdueled Jerome Williams by tossing a two-hitter as host San Diego took the opener of the four-game series.

Rene Rivera doubled and scored while Jedd Gyorko and Yangervis Solarte each recorded a single for the Padres, who had lost nine of their previous 11 games. Cashner (4-7) walked one and struck out seven en route to his third career shutout - and second this season.

Domonic Brown and Marlon Byrd singled for the Phillies, who had their five-game winning streak against San Diego come to an end. Williams (5-7) allowed just an unearned run and three hits with two walks and six strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings.

Gyorko recorded the game's first hit, a two-out single in the first inning, and Rivera led off the second with a double before moving to third on a groundout. Following a lineout and a walk, Rivera raced home when Philadelphia third baseman Cody Asche muffed Cashner's hard grounder.

Cashner kept the Phillies hitless until Brown bunted for a single with one out in the fifth. Byrd opened the eighth with a base hit but was thrown out attempting to tag up on a deep flyout to right fielder Seth Smith by Brown.

GAME NOTEBOOK: San Diego had a chance to add insurance as it loaded the bases in the eighth, but Yasmani Grandal grounded out to end the threat. ... The Padres improved to a major league-best 29-19 in one-run games. ... Cashner retired the side in order six times and faced the minimum in every inning but the fourth. ... Philadelphia fell to 69-81, which guarantees a third straight non-winning season after it claimed five straight National League East titles.
