Yankees 5, Orioles 4
NEW YORK -- Catcher Brian McCann hit a two-run homer and right fielder Carlos Beltran added a two-run double as the New York Yankees took an early five-run lead and held on for a 5-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night.
Designated hitter Alex Rodriguez added a sacrifice fly and also tripled for the Yankees, who won for the 13th time in 17 games.
Four relievers finished up after right-hander Adam Warren allowed two runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. Since Warren did not go five innings, official scoring rules state he does not qualify for the victory.
The win went to Dellin Betances (1-0), who protected a one-run lead by getting the final out of the seventh and retiring the side in the eighth. Andrew Miller worked the ninth for his 13th save in as many opportunities.
Orioles third baseman Manny Machado singled three times and was on base four times, but he stunted rallies twice on the bases.
Besides Machado's RBI single, Baltimore also scored on a groundout by right fielder Delmon Young and a two-run single by designated hitter Jimmy Paredes in the sixth against Chris Martin.
Baltimore also withstood two injury scares to center fielder Adam Jones. He fouled a ball off his left foot in the first inning and then ran hard into the right-center field fence trying to track down a fly ball by Rodriguez in the fifth. Jones appeared to injure his left shoulder after falling to the ground but remained in the game.
Orioles right-hander Miguel Gonzalez (3-2) allowed five runs and five hits in four innings.
The Yankees took a 3-0 lead in the first against Gonzalez. Rodriguez lifted a sacrifice fly to deep center field and McCann sent a 3-0 pitch into the right-field seats for his third home run of the season.
Warren had help from his defense early, getting a strong throw by left fielder Brett Gardner that easily caught Machado at the plate. Machado also was thrown out by McCann trying to steal second for the first out of the third and, on the next pitch, Gardner made a running, over-the-shoulder catch against Paredes.
Gonzalez loaded the bases with two outs in the third when he intentionally walked McCann. Beltran lined a two-run double that would have been a bases-clearing two-base hit, but McCann was thrown out on a relay throw by second baseman Ryan Flaherty.
The Orioles scored twice in the fifth, cutting the deficit to 5-2 on a single by Machado and a bases-loaded groundout by Young on a ball that was hit too slowly for the Yankees to turn a double play.
