Orioles 5, Red Sox 2
BALTIMORE -- J.J. Hardy drove in two runs, and Adam Jones knocked in a run and made three spectacular plays in center field as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox 5-2 Wednesday night.
The Orioles (28-30) won their third consecutive games and improved to 5-1 in their past six.
Hardy sparked a two-run third inning with a double that produced the game's first run. The shortstop added a sixth-inning sacrifice fly following left fielder Travis Snider's run-scoring single. That two-run inning gave the Orioles a 5-2 lead over the Red Sox (27-33).
Jones threw out shortstop Xander Bogaerts at second in the second inning and made a leaping catch to rob center fielder Mookie Betts later that inning.
When Betts came up again in the fifth, Jones raced to right-center, and his diving catch robbed him once more.
Orioles left-hander Wei-Yin Chen (2-4) ended a three-game losing streak by working through five-plus innings. He gave up two runs on seven hits.
Right-handers Tommy Hunter and Darren O'Day then each threw two innings to finish it, combining to retire all 12 Boston batters they faced. O'Day earned his second save of the season.
Boston starter Rick Porcello (4-6) gave up five runs on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings and took his fourth consecutive loss.
First baseman Chris Davis started the bottom of the second by dropping a bunt down the third base line against the Boston shift. He reached on a single and was later forced out, but the Orioles eventually got an RBI double from Hardy plus a Flaherty RBI single to go up 2-0.
The Red Sox cut the lead in half when left fielder Brock Holt lined an RBI double to left in the top of the third. Jones then answered with an RBI single in the bottom of that inning, a slow ground ball that rolled through the drawn-in Red Sox infield and gave the Orioles a 3-1 lead.
