Royals 8, Brewers 5

MILWAUKEE -- Alcides Escobar singled twice and drove in a pair of runs, and Lorenzo Cain hit a two-run homer to lead the Kansas City Royals to an 8-5 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers Monday night at Miller Park.

Cain also finished with two hits, as did catcher Salvatore Perez, right fielder Alex Rios and second baseman Omar Infante.

In all, the Royals collected 13 hits off four different Milwaukee pitchers but did most of their damage against struggling right-handed starter Kyle Lohse.

Lohse was in trouble early, hitting shortstop Alcides Escobar to pen the game then giving up singles to three of the next four hitters as the Royals took a 3-0 lead.

He settled down form there but a one-out walk to third baseman Mike Moustakas turned into a 5-0 lead when Cain followed with his fifth home run of the season.

Lohse had thrown 100 pitches and was charged with five runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts when he was pulled for pinch-hitter Hernan Perez in the fifth inning.

The move led to Milwaukee's first run; Perez reached on a single and scored on a two-run double by catcher Jonathan Lucroy.

Kansas City's early efforts helped make up for a short start by right-hander Edinson Volquez, who allowed just the two runs six hits and two walks with two strikeouts, also over five innings.

Milwaukee added three in the ninth against right-hander Greg Holland, drawing within three after Lucroy's second double of the day.

With nobody out and runners at second and third, right-hander Wade Davis came on and retired right fielder Ryan Braun, first baseman Adam Lind and third baseman Aramis Ramirez in order to clinch his eighth save of the season.

NOTES: Royals manager Ned Yost said RHP Yordano Ventura threw a 35-pitch bullpen session Monday but will not start Wednesday as originally scheduled. Ventura will instead be bumped back to Friday against Red Sox, giving him two extra days to recover from a bout of numbness in his right hand that forced him from his last start after only three innings. RHP Joe Blanton will make the start in Ventura's place. ... CF Carlos Gomez was scratched from the starting lineup because of tightness in his leg that kept him from three of Milwaukee's last four games. Manager Craig Counsell said Gomez is day-to-day. .... OF Trent Clark, Milwaukee's first-round draft pick last week, took batting practice and worked out with the team prior to the game after agreeing to terms on a contract.
