Phillies 11, Yankees 8
NEW YORK -- Rookie third baseman Maikel Franco homered twice and had a career-high four RBIs as the Philadelphia Phillies snapped a 12-game road losing streak with an 11-8 victory over the New York Yankees Monday night.
Franco had hits in his first four at-bats.
He hit a solo home run in the first, an infield single in the third and a two-run single in the fourth. He recorded his first career two home-run game and first four-hit game with a long two-run home run off New York left-hander Chris Capuano with two outs in the sixth.
Franco finished the game 4-for-5 and since June 2 he leads the National League with 32 hits. Franco also has 12 hits in his last 24 at-bats and leads Philadelphia with nine home runs and 23 RBIs since being recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley May 15.
First baseman Ryan Howard added a two-run single for Philadelphia, which snapped its longest road losing streak since Aug. 28-Sept. 14, 1999. Second baseman Cesar Hernandez added an RBI double for the Phillies, who had been outscored by a 73-22 margin during the 12th road losing streak of at least 12 games in team history.
Center fielder Ben Revere finished off Philadelphia's eighth road win in 36 games with an RBI single in the ninth.
Left fielder Brett Gardner hit a three-run home run for the Yankees, who have been outscored 24-9 in their last two losses. Catcher Brian McCann homered and had an RBI single and right fielder Carlos Beltran lifted a sacrifice fly for New York.
Philadelphia right-hander Kevin Correia allowed five runs and eight hits in four innings but did not qualify for the win per official scoring rules. Jake Diekman (2-1) pitched two innings for the win, striking out designated hitter Alex Rodriguez with two outs and two on in the sixth.
After three relievers pitched four scoreless innings, Jonathan Papelbon gave up a two-run double to first baseman Garrett Jones before finishing it off.
New York's Michael Pineda (8-4) was rocked for career highs of eight runs and 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings.
The Phillies opened the scoring when Franco sent a 1-2 cutter over the left-field wall for his eighth home run but the Yankees scored twice in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by McCann and a double to the warning track by Beltran. The Yankees had a chance to take a two-run lead but Beltran was thrown out by right fielder Domonic Brown trying to score on a single by Jones.
Philadelphia loaded the bases with nobody out in the third on two singles and a walk and took a 3-2 lead when Howard lined a single up the middle. The Phillies took a two-run lead on a groundout by Brown but Howard was thrown out in a rundown trying to go from first to second.
The Phillies loaded the bases again in the fourth and extended their lead to 6-2 on a two-run single to right field by Hernandez. Philadelphia knocked out Pineda when Franco lined a two-run single up the middle.
New York got within 8-5 when Gardner hit a three-run home run with two outs in the fourth.
