Yankees 7, Rays 5 (12 innings)
NEW YORK -- First baseman Mark Teixeira hit the game-tying three-run home run with one out in the eighth inning and catcher Brian McCann hit the game-winning three-run home run with one out in the 12th, lifting the New York Yankees to a 7-5 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday.
Teixeira forged a 3-3 tie when he drove a 1-0 changeup from Kevin Jepsen into the right-field seats. After Brett Gardner opened the 12th inning with a walk and Alex Rodriguez singled, Teixeira came up with a chance to win it against Steve Geltz (1-4).
Teixeira fell behind 1-2 but got the Yankees to within a run by hitting a single to shallow right field as fireworks from neighboring apartment buildings went off.
After Teixeira's hit, McCann drove a 1-0 pitch from Geltz into the right field seats for his 13th home run. As he approached home plate, McCann threw his helmet into the air and was mobbed by his teammates.
It was McCann's seventh career walkoff hit and fourth career walkoff home run.
Chasen Shreve (6-1) picked up the win despite allowing a double to center fielder Kevin Kiermaier and a single to catcher Rene Rivera that gave Tampa Bay a 5-3 lead with two outs in the 12th.
Long before the 12th, right-hander Chris Archer was on his way to improving to 6-0 against the Yankees. Archer allowed three hits in 6 2/3 scoreless innings although he threw a season-high 122 pitches.
Tampa Bay took a 3-0 lead by scoring twice in the first and once in the fifth off Masahiro Tanaka. Longoria had an RBI double and first baseman James Loney lifted a sacrifice fly in the first while Rivera lifted a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Tanaka allowed three runs and six hits in six innings.
Tampa Bay took a 2-0 lead just four batters into the game. Longoria doubled to left field and Loney lifted a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left. With a runner on third, Tanaka got out of the inning with consecutive ground balls.
The Rays went ahead 3-0 in the fifth when center fielder Kevin Kiermaier opened the inning with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rivera.
Archer allowed three hits through five innings and was aided by a terrific running catch from Kiermaier on a fly ball off the bat of second baseman Stephen Drew in the fourth.
