Braves 5, Mets 3 (11)

NEW YORK -- Center fielder Cameron Maybin's two-run single in the top of the 11th inning Saturday capped a comeback by the Atlanta Braves, who edged the New York Mets 5-3 at Citi Field.

The Braves (30-32) won for just the fifth time in 12 games this month to pull within 2 1/2 games of the first-place Mets (33-30) in the National League East. New York had a two-game winning streak snapped.

The Braves trailed 3-1 in the ninth but tied the score with four singles off right-hander Hansel Robles and left-hander Alex Torres, including back-to-back two-out RBI hits by Maybin and first baseman Freddie Freeman.

Right-hander Carlos Torres (2-3) set down the Braves in order in the 10th before Atlanta opened the 11th with consecutive singles by shortstop Andrelton Simmons and third baseman Juan Uribe. The runners moved up a base on a sacrifice by second baseman Jace Peterson, after which Maybin singled sharply to center for his third hit since the eighth inning.

The rally made a winner out of right-hander Jason Grilli (2-2), who threw a perfect 10th. Right-hander Williams Perez allowed a pair of singles in the 11th but got pinch hitter John Mayberry to line into a double play and retired center fielder Juan Lagares on a fielder's choice grounder to earn his first save.

Atlanta relievers, who began the day with the third-worst ERA (4.65) in the majors, retired 13 of the final 15 batters.

Simmons had four hits. Freeman had two hits, including a solo homer in the first.

For the Mets, catcher Travis d'Arnaud had a game-tying RBI single in the seventh while first baseman Lucas Duda had an RBI double later in the inning. Duda and right fielder Curtis Granderson had two hits apiece.

The Braves' rally cost right-hander Jacob deGrom the win. DeGrom allowed one run on five hits and one walk while striking out nine in seven innings. In his last six starts, deGrom is 4-0 with a 1.25 ERA, 53 strikeouts and just five walks over 43 1/3 innings.

Braves right-hander Shelby Miller allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four over 6 1/3 innings. He allowed only one runner past second base in the first six innings before tiring in the seventh.

NOTES: The Mets claimed OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday, only 17 days after the Angels acquired Nieuwenhuis from the Mets for cash considerations. To make room for Nieuwenhuis on the 40-man roster, the Mets shifted LHP Jerry Blevins to the 60-day disabled list. ... The son of Mets RHP Jeurys Familia was born Friday night as Familia wriggled out of a bases-loaded situation in the ninth inning of the Mets' 5-3 win. "Going to name him 'Get Out Of A Jam,'" manager Terry Collins said with a grin. ... Braves C A.J. Pierzynski caught the 1,800th game of his career on Saturday. He is the 13th catcher to reach the milestone. ... RF Nick Markakis made his 27th start in the cleanup spot for the Braves. Before this season, he hadn't batted fourth since 2009.
