Reds 9, Brewers 7

MILWAUKEE -- Second baseman Brandon Phillips hit the go-ahead single following a lengthy delay as the Cincinnati Reds scored three times in the top of the eighth inning to pull past the Milwaukee Brewers for a 9-7 victory Saturday night at Miller Park.

Phillips had the game-winning hit off right-hander Tyler Cravy (0-7) following a scary collision involving Milwaukee third baseman Elian Herrera, shortstop Jean Segura and center fielder Shane Peterson on a single by left fielder Skip Schumaker.

Schumaker's hit dropped in between the players resulting in a collision. Herrera had to be taken off the field by an ambulance cart while Peterson left the game under his own power.

Following the delay, first baseman Joey Votto, who had a two-run home run and a double, was intentionally walked. Phillips then put the Reds in front with a single

Looking to snap a seven-game losing streak, Milwaukee had pulled ahead, 7-6 on an RBI single by right fielder Domingo Santana.

Santana set a career-high with five RBI and got Milwaukee started with a two-run double in the first.

The Reds got a run back in the third when right-hander Josh Smith led off with a triple and then scored on Schumaker's RBI single. Votto gave Cincinnati the lead when he followed with his 28th homer of the season.

Milwaukee evened the score in the bottom of the inning when left fielder Khris Davis singled to score second baseman Scooter Gennett.

The Brewers moved back in front when center fielder Logan Schafer opened the fourth with his first home run since Sept. 10, 2013.

Smith lasted only four innings, allowing four runs, six hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Left-hander Tony Cingrani took over in the fifth and Santana broke the game open with a two-run homer.

Cincinnati tied the game in the sixth on a two-run homer by third baseman Todd Frazier and an RBI groundout from pinch-hitter Brayan Pena.

Brewers right-hander Taylor Jungmann worked five-plus innings and allowed six runs, eight hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

NOTES: Brewers RHP Jimmy Nelson returned to the team Saturday, but he will not participate in baseball activities this weekend as he recovers from a brain contusion suffered when he was struck in the head by a line drive Wednesday against St. Louis. Manager Craig Counsell said Nelson will pitch again this season but probably won't make his next scheduled start, which would have come Tuesday at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs. ... Milwaukee was also without RF Ryan Braun, who has been battling back soreness for the last few weeks. Counsell said Braun's availability is day to day. ... Reds CF Billy Hamilton is still in Cincinnati, where he underwent an MRI exam on Friday on his sore right shoulder. ... 1B Joey Votto returned to the Cincinnati lineup on Saturday after serving a one-game suspension for his role in a Sept. 9 altercation with umpire Bill Welke.
