Giants 3, Brewers 1
MILWAUKEE -- Joe Panik hit a two-run homer and right-hander Ryan Vogelsong matched a season high with five strikeouts as the San Francisco Giants completed a three-game sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers with a 3-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Miller Park.
Panik collected two hits and erased a 1-0 Milwaukee lead in the fifth inning when he homered off Brewers right-hander Mike Fiers.
Fiers (1-5) was starting on short rest in place of right-hander Wily Peralta and struck out six in his five-inning stint, allowing eight hits without a walk.
The Milwaukee offense didn't do much to help his cause. Left fielder Khris Davis tripled in the first and fourth innings but failed to score either time.
Milwaukee got on the board later in the fourth when first baseman Adam Lind scored on second baseman Elian Herrera's base hit, but the Brewers managed just two hits the rest of the day.
Vogelsong (4-2) gave up five hits and didn't walk a batter to win his third consecutive road start. He improved to 4-0 with a 1.13 ERA in five May starts after beginning the season 0-2 with a 9.88 ERA.
San Francisco added an insurance run in the ninth when center fielder Angel Pagan scored on a pinch-sacrifice fly by Gregor Blanco.
Right-hander Santiago Casilla posted his 14th save with a perfect ninth.
It was the Giants' first sweep in Milwaukee since 2010. They finished their road trip with a 5-2 record and return to San Francisco 1 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, who played host to the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday night.
The Brewers were swept for the third time this season and at 16-32 own the worst record in the major leagues this season.
NOTES: OF Angel Pagan returned to the Giants' lineup Tuesday but was dropped down to seventh in the order as he tries to snap out of a small slump. Pagan is batting .306 this season but just .205 in his last 11 games, including 0-for-7 in his last three. ... Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said the team would wait before selecting a minor league pitcher to replace RHP Wily Peralta, who went on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a strained left oblique. RHP Mike Fiers started on short rest in Peralta's place Wednesday and RHP Jimmy Nelson will go Friday, his normal day. Peralta's next turn would come Tuesday when the Brewers face the Cardinals in St. Louis. ... Giants RHP Jake Peavy, out since April 18 with a strained back, will make a rehab start tonight for Triple-A Sacramento. ... Brewers C Jonathan Lucroy will begin a rehab assignment Thursday with Class A Advanced Brevard County. He has been sidelined since fracturing the big toe on his right foot on April 21.
