Gausman ends road skid as Orioles blank Yankees
NEW YORK -- Kevin Gausman pitched seven effective innings for his first road win in over two years and Mark Trumbo became the first player in the majors to reach 40 home runs as the Baltimore Orioles salvaged a frustrating weekend with a 5-0 victory over the New York Yankees on Sunday afternoon.
Steve Pearce drove in Baltimore's first three runs with a solo home run off CC Sabathia (8-11) and a two-run single off Adam Warren. Trumbo added some insurance with a 427-foot drive off Ben Heller into the visiting bullpen beyond the left-center field wall.
Those hits were more than enough for Gausman (6-10), who often has received low run support. He had been 0-16 with a 5.55 ERA in 25 starts outside of Baltimore since Aug. 22, 2014 and 0-9 on the road this year with a 5.32 ERA.
Gausman won his third straight start and turned in his second straight scoreless outing. He allowed seven hits but held the Yankees to two hits in 12 at-bats with men on base.
The Orioles won for the fifth time in their last 13 games and kept pace with the Toronto Blue Jays ahead of their three-game series with the AL East leaders.
Rookie Gary Sanchez had another two hits for the Yankees but lined out to center field and grounded out softly in the sixth before getting a double in the eighth when the Orioles held a five-run lead.
Sabathia, who was moved up a day because of good numbers against the Orioles, was charged with three runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings.
The game was scoreless until Pearce opened the sixth by driving Sabathia's 2-2 fastball over the left field fence for his 12th home run. The Orioles extended the seventh when Nolan Reimold reached on an infield hit that deflected by second baseman Starlin Castro and knocked out Sabathia when Hyun Soo Kim walked.
Five pitches later, Pearce singled up the middle against Warren for a 3-0 lead.
After Manny Machado ended the seventh with a diving stop on a ground ball by Ronald Torreyes, Trumbo connected off Heller. Machado's dive and throw from his knees occurred three innings after Pearce threw out Sanchez at third base on Mark Teixeira's single to right field.
NOTES: The Orioles made four roster moves Sunday as they signed RHP Tommy Hunter and recalled RHP Oliver Drake from Triple-A Norfolk. To add their two newest pitchers, the Orioles designated LHP T.J. McFarland and OF Julio Borbon. ... 3B Chase Headley was out of the starting lineup again as the Yankees ride the production of 3B Ronald Torreyes. Manager Joe Girardi said Headley would start at some point this week. ... Baltimore RHP Chris Tillman (shoulder bursitis) will throw Monday but the team does not expect him to return before Sept. 9 or 10. ... RHP Bryan Mitchell is scheduled to start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre but the Yankees have not discussed how they will use him if he gets recalled. Mitchell has not pitched this season in the majors due to a foot injury sustained late in spring training.
