Indians work 19 innings for 14th win in row

TORONTO -- Carlos Santana led off the 19th inning with his 17th homer of the season against infielder Darwin Barney, who was pitching, and the Cleveland Indians defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 on Friday afternoon to win their club-record 14th straight game.

The Blue Jays also played 19 innings against the Detroit Tigers on Aug. 10, 2014. Friday's game took six hours and 13 minutes

The Blue Jays sent out infielder Ryan Goins to pitch the 18th, the ninth position player in franchise history to pitch for Toronto. He allowed singles to Jose Ramirez and Lonnie Chisenhall, who had five hits, to put runners at the corners.

Ramirez was out trying for home on a grounder to second by Michael Martinez. Tyler Naquin was intentionally walked and Chris Gimenez grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Barney (0-1), who made the third out of the 18th inning, came on to pitch in the 19th. Devon Travis, who was serving as designated hitter, took over from Barney at second base. Barney allowed the home run before retiring his next three batters.

Trevor Bauer (7-2), scheduled to be Cleveland's starter on Saturday, entered the game in the 15th inning and picked up the win by allowing two hits and three walks while striking out three.

Justin Smoak homered for Toronto to tie the game in the sixth, was in his third inning of relief.

The Blue Jays (43-39) had three ejections in game.

Tommy Hunter, who pitched a perfect 12th, hit Josh Donaldson with a pitch to open the bottom of the 13th. Donaldson was forced at second on a grounder to short by Travis. Michael Saunders struck out looking. Russell Martin also was called out on strikes and, when he objected, he was ejected.

Martin had to be restrained from going after plate umpire Vic Carapazza before leaving the field.

Blue Jays designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion and manager John Gibbons were ejected by Carapazza in the first inning. Encarnacion argued a called third strike that ended the inning and Gibbons also was ejected after leaving the dugout to pursue the argument.

The ejection was the first of the season for Encarnacion and the sixth for Gibbons. Travis took over as DH.

Cleveland starter Josh Tomlin allowed one run on seven hits, two walks (one intentional) and struck out eight in six innings.

Toronto starter Marcus Stroman allowed one run on five hits and had six strikeouts in 6 ? innings.

Jason Kipnis extended his hit streak to 13 games with an RBI single in the third inning to Carlos Santana, who led off with a double to center.

The Blue Jays (49-30) tied the game with two out in the sixth when Smoak hit his eighth homer of the season.

The Indians loaded the bases in the seventh but left-hander Brett Cecil replaced Stroman and ended the inning on a flyout to center by Kipnis.

Jesse Chavez set the Indians down in order in the 11th, 12th and 13th before Zach McAllister overcame two walks in the bottom of the 11th.

After Drew Storen pitched around a leadoff single in the top of the 14th, Joba Chamberlain loaded the bases with two out before retiring Donaldson on a grounder to first.

Storen walked Kipnis with one out in the 15th. Francisco Lindor singled off the glove of first baseman Junior Lake, who entered the game in the 14th as a pinch-runner, to put runners at the corners.

Bo Schultz replaced Storen and ended the threat when Mike Napoli grounded to third to start a double play. Schultz pitched 2 2/3 innings.
