Martinez's single leads Tigers past Phillies

DETROIT -- Victor Martinez lined a single to right to score Miguel Cabrera from third with one out in the seventh inning Monday night to give the Detroit Tigers a 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies and the club's seventh win in eight games.

Cabrera, who also hit two solo home runs, became the 62nd major league player to reach 500 career doubles when he lined a two-bagger to the wall in right center with one out in the seventh. He went to third on a wild pitch and scored the tie-breaking run when Victor Martinez lined a high 1-0 pitch to right for a single.

Justin Wilson (1-1) got the win for pitching a scoreless seventh while Colton Murray (0-1) took the loss. Francisco Rodriguez notched his 13th save, striking out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth for the Tigers.

Detroit starter Mike Pelfrey lasted six innings, allowing 11 hits and a lone run in each of his last four frames. Vincent Velasquez went the first four for Philadelphia, giving up three solo home runs among the nine hits he allowed.

Tommy Joseph hit his second home run with the Phillies to create a 4-4 tie. It came with one out and nobody on in the sixth.

Detroit took a 4-3 lead in the fifth with three solo home runs in the space of four batters. Nick Castellanos completed the home-run hat trick with his ninth, one out after back-to-back shots by J.D. Martinez and Miguel Cabrera.

Cabrera tied the score, 3-3, when he followed J.D. Martinez's 10th home run of the season by hitting his 11th and second of the game to begin the fifth inning. Cabrera now has 10 home runs since April 25.

Singles by Tyler Goeddel and Odubel Herrera plus a sacrifice fly by Cesar Hernandez had boosted Philadelphia's lead to 3-1 in the fifth.

Maikel Franco broke a 1-1 tie when he led off the fourth inning with his eighth home run of the season. The Phillies scored first on an RBI single to left by Herrera, which scored Goeddel from second in the third. Left fielder Steven Moya might have had a shot at a play at the plate but he didn't come up throwing quickly on the hit.

Cabrera tied the score at 1-1 in the third with his first home run of the game.
