Angels pull out victory over struggling Athletics
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Albert Pujols' weak ground ball scored Yunel Escobar in the bottom of the eighth inning and gave the Los Angeles Angels a 2-1 win over the Oakland Athletics on Monday night at Angel Stadium.
Mike Trout hit his 29th home run for the Angels, who have won five of their last six and seven of 10.
Stephen Vogt's 13th homer failed to prevent the A's from sustaining their sixth loss in seven games.
The Angels broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning after loading the bases against reliever Ryan Dull (5-5).
With one out, Escobar singled up the middle, then Kole Calhoun hit a double under the glove of first baseman Alonzo and down the right-field line and Trout received an intentional walk.
Pujols hit a weak ground ball toward the pitcher's mound. Dull bobbled it and had trouble recovering it before making an underhand throw while falling to get Pujols. Escobar scored on the play.
The A's put the potential tying run on base in the ninth when Khris Davis walked with two out. But closer Andrew Bailey induced Yonder Alonzo to ground out to earn his sixth save and preserve the victory for J.C. Ramirez (2-1).
Los Angeles right-hander Jered Weaver left the game after five innings because of a tight lower back. Weaver retired the first 14 batters he faced, conceded just one hit and one walk in five shutout innings, and finished with three strikeouts.
Oakland left-hander Sean Manaea extended his scoreless streak to 15 1/3 consecutive innings before Trout's home run and retired 15 of 16 batters between the first and the sixth innings. Manaea permitted just one run, four hits, one walk and one hit batter in seven innings while inducing 14 groundouts and registering three strikeouts.
Trout put the Angels ahead in the fourth inning when he hit his 29th home run of the season. On a full count, Trout pounded an 83 mph changeup from Manaea 436 feet into the left-field bleachers for a solo drive.
The A's responded in the fifth by foiling Weaver's bid for a perfect game and putting the potential tying run in scoring position.
Weaver retired the first 14 batters he faced, three by strikeout, before Danny Valencia hit a sharp ground ball past diving third baseman Escobar for a single. Valencia stole second base before Marcus Semien walked. But Bruce Maxwell hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Vogt then tied the score in the top of the sixth with his 13th home run of the year. He lined a 92 mph fastball from reliever Deolis Guerra down the right-field line.
