Jays erase six-run deficit to rip Yankees 12-6
NEW YORK -- Edwin Encarnacion and Russell Martin hit two-run homers in the eighth inning as the Toronto Blue Jays rallied from a six-run deficit for a 12-6 victory over the New York Yankees on Tuesday.
The Blue Jays (68-52), held scoreless for the first 14 innings of the series, capitalized on a 42-minute rain delay which knocked both starting pitchers out early.
After getting the deficit to 6-4, Encarnacion followed a 12-pitch walk by Josh Donaldson by lining a 1-0 slider from Adam Warren (1-1) into the left field seats for his 34th home run and 99th RBI.
Troy Tulowitzki had four hits, including a two-run homer in the sixth and scored the tiebreaking run when Martin hit a 1-2 fastball pitch over the right field wall.
It was Martin's 12th career multi home run game and third straight at Yankee Stadium, where he played home games in 2011 and 2012.
It marked the eighth time the Blue Jays had four home runs but first instance since July 5.
The Blue Jays continued piling on after Martin's 13th home run and took a 9-6 lead on a bases-loaded single by Devon Travis. Toronto reached double digit runs for the 12th time this season when Donaldson drew a bases-loaded walk off Chasen Shreve and scored its final runs on Michael Saunders' two-run double.
Before Toronto stormed back much to the delight of its many fans in the crowd, rookie Gary Sanchez homered twice and Didi Gregorius homered and had an RBI single for the Yankees.
Those home runs came off Marco Estrada, who allowed five runs and five hits in four innings. Scott Feldman (6-4) fanned five in three innings for his first win as a Blue Jay.
New York's Michael Pineda allowed four hits and five scoreless innings.
The Yankees took a 1-0 lead when Gregorius lifted a first-pitch changeup from Estrada into the right field seats in the first inning for his career-high 16th home run.
Sanchez made it 2-0 in the second by driving a full count pitch into the visiting bullpen beyond the left-center field fence. Following singles by Starlin Castro and Brian McCann, Sanchez drove a 2-1 curveball into the second deck in left field in the fourth.
Sanchez's second home run came as heavy rains started and following the top of the fifth, the game was delayed.
Following the delay, the Yankees took a 6-0 lead when Chase Headley doubled off Feldman and scored on a Gregorius single.
