Anderson dominates Athletics in Brewers' victory
MILWAUKEE -- Chase Anderson took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and Scooter Gennett drove in three runs as the Milwaukee Brewers swept a two-game interleague series from the Oakland Athletics with a 4-0 victory Thursday at Miller Park.
A night after Zach Davies held them hitless through six innings, the Athletics managed one baserunner -- Coco Crisp reached on an error in the fourth inning -- until a one-out pinch-hit single by Jake Smolinski in the sixth en route to their fifth straight loss.
Anderson (4-6) allowed one more hit, didn't walk a batter and struck out four before turning things over to the bullpen in the seventh.
It was the latest effort in a strong stretch for Anderson, who has gone 3-1 with a 2.03 ERA in his last five starts.
Gennett, Jonathan Villar and Kirk Nieuwenhuis had two hits apiece for the Brewers, who have won two in a row and 10 of their last 15.
A leadoff single and a stolen base by Jonathan Villar turned into a 1-0 Milwaukee lead when Gennett singled through the hole at short. Milwaukee plated another in the second on Ramon Flores' sacrifice fly and Gennett came through again in the fourth, sending home a pair when blooped a single in to shallow right with the bases loaded.
That ended the day for Athletics starter Jesse Hahn (2-4), who allowed eight hits and failed to strike out a batter in 3 2/3 innings.
Oakland's bullpen allowed just hit over the final 4 1/3 innings, but the Athletics couldn't muster anything against Milwaukee's relievers, which also allowed one hit -- a two-out single by Billy Burns in the ninth off left-hander Will Smith.
NOTES: Athletics LF Khris Davis sat out a second consecutive game Wednesday in Milwaukee as his left arm is still sore after being hit with a pitch Saturday. ... Oakland was also without 3B Danny Valencia, though both he and Davis were available to pinch-hit if needed, manager Bob Melvin said. ... Milwaukee RHP Matt Garza will head north to Appleton, Wis., where he will make his final minor league rehab start for Class A Wisconsin. Garza will be on a 75-pitch limit and could return to Milwaukee next week if the start goes well. He's been out all season with a strained right lat muscle. ... The Brewers held a moment of silence before the game in memory of Ruben Quevedo, who died of a heart attack Tuesday at age 37. Quevedo spent three seasons with Milwaukee, going 14-30 with a 6.15 ERA in 66 appearances (58 starts).
