Flores, deGrom propel Mets past Marlins
NEW YORK -- Wilmer Flores hit two homers in a game for the second time in four days and right-hander Jacob deGrom threw seven strong innings Wednesday afternoon as the New York Mets beat the Miami Marlins, 4-2, at Citi Field.
The Mets (46-38) won two of three from the Marlins (44-41) to ensure they would be no more than four games behind the National League East-leading Washington Nationals heading into a four-game series that begins Thursday at Citi Field.
Flores belted solo homers in each of his first two at-bats before hitting into a double play in the fifth inning and striking out in the eighth. He also had two homers Sunday, when he tied a team record by collecting six hits in a 14-3 win over the Chicago Cubs.
Curtis Granderson had two hits, including a two-run single in the third, for the Mets while Jose Reyes doubled twice for his first hits since rejoining New York on Tuesday.
DeGrom (5-4) allowed two runs -- both on monstrous blasts to left field by Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton -- on six hits and two walks while striking out seven. He threw a season-high 117 pitches, including 79 for strikes.
Addison Reed threw a perfect eighth inning before Jeurys Familia notched his 30th save with a one-hit ninth.
Stanton went deep in both the fourth and sixth inning for his second two-homer game in a span of less than 24 hours. The second blast was the 200th career homer for Stanton, who went deep twice in a game for the 18th time in his career. He drove in all seven of the Marlins' runs in the final two games of the series.
Miami left-hander Justin Nicolino (2-5) took the loss after allowing all four runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out two over four innings.
NOTES: The Marlins placed 1B Justin Bour (right ankle sprain) on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 3, and purchased the contract of INF Don Kelly from Triple-A New Orleans. The Mets scratched SS Asdrubal Cabrera about 10 minutes before first pitch. He was replaced by Jose Reyes, who moved from third base. James Loney went into the lineup at first base to replace Wilmer Flores, who moved to third base. ... The Marlins have four players in the All-Star Game for the first time since 2005. The Mets have three All-Star representatives for the first time since 2009.
