ST. LOUIS -- Scoring in each of the last four innings Friday night, the Miami Marlins took advantage of the St. Louis Cardinals' shaky bullpen and defense to capture a 7-6 win at Busch Stadium.
Second baseman Miguel Rojas' two-out, two-strike RBI single off closer Seung Hwan Oh (2-1) scored Marcell Ozuna with the winning run. Ozuna reached on a double that sailed over the head of center fielder Randal Grichuk, who appeared to have a routine play on the ball and couldn't come up with it.
Miami (48-41) tied it in the eighth with a two-out RBI single from Martin Prado that scored Ichiro Suzuki, whose pinch-single with one out was the 2,991st hit of his major league career. Suzuki reached second base on a bad pickoff throw by reliever Kevin Siegrist, St. Louis' major league-high 69th error of the year.
Fernando Rodney (1-2) picked up the win with a clean eighth and closer A.J. Ramos worked the ninth for his 28th save as the Marlins remained tied with the New York Mets for the National League's second wild-card spot.
The Cardinals (46-43) fell to 19-27 at home despite walloping four homers, two by Tommy Pham. He and Grichuk gave St. Louis a 6-5 advantage in the seventh with solo shots an out apart off reliever David Phelps.
Ozuna's two-run single off reliever Trevor Rosenthal capped a three-run seventh that enabled Miami to grab a 5-4 edge.
Neither starter was involved in the decision. Marlins left-hander Wei-Yin Chen pitched six innings, allowing six hits and four runs with a walk and five strikeouts. Cardinals left-hander Jaime Garcia worked 6 1/3 innings, yielding eight hits and four runs while walking two and whiffing two.
The game ended shortly after it began for home plate umpire Chad Fairchild, who departed with one out in the bottom of the first after taking a Matt Holliday foul ball off his right elbow.
Neither team scored until the fourth, when Miami's Chris Johnson grounded an RBI double down the left field line to plate Marcell Ozuna. That happened three pitches after St. Louis failed to turn a 4-6-3 double play off Ozuna's bat as shortstop Aledmys Diaz bounced a throw to first despite having plenty of time to set his feet and throw.
However, the Cardinals erased that mistake and then some in their half of the fourth. Stephen Piscotty led off with his 12th homer, a fly ball that Ozuna appeared to lose in the lights before it settled into the center field seats.
Pham made it 4-1 when he jumped on a 1-2 breaking ball and lined it inside the left field foul pole, scoring Yadier Molina and Jedd Gyorko.
